B2. Reports: IISTD Activities, Sept. 1996-Dec. 1997, and 1998 and Beyond
IISTD began functioning in September 1996. It had been operated earlier, with help of the International Institute of Islamic Thought, under a different name, IIIST, International Institute of Islamic Science and Technology. IIIST ( 1988-90 ) had became dormant due to lack of funds. The purpose of presenting this Report on recent and proposed IISTD activities is:
* TO SEEK COOPERATION FROM INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS TO
INTENSIFY, EXPAND, AND IMPROVE IISTD ACTIVITIES.
* TO REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS, FUNDS, FEEDBACK; AND
* TO ESTABLISH LOCAL IISTD CHAPTERS OR COORDINATORS

IISTD Activities, Sept. 1996-Dec. 1997
1) In North America, mailed three IISTD brochures and other material to 800 Islamic centers, 400 chapters of Muslim students' associations, and 1150 Muslim medical professionals.
2) IISTD promoted its Action Plan in Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and U.K. also through conferences, lectures, printed and electronic media such as: International Islamic Forum For Science, Technology, and Human Resources Development, Intl. Conference, 1996, Jakarta; Islamic Society of N. America, 34th Annual Convention, 1997, Chicago; American Federation of Muslims from India, Annual Convention, 1997, San Jose, CA; Assn. of Muslim Social Scientists, Annual Convention, 1997, Brockport, NY.
3) Published, distributed mostly in the Gulf States, the books authored by Waqar Ahmed Husaini: Islamic Thought in Development of Water Resources and Energy; and Quran for Astronomy and Earth Exploration from Space, English and Arabic translation; and Water Resources Sciences and Engineering in the Quran.
4) Contacts and Islamic advocacy with US government and other organizations such as: U.S. State Department; U.S. Information Agency; NSF/National Science Foundation; NEH/National Endowment for Humanities; AAAS/Amer. Assn. for Advancement of Science; Center for Cultural Change & Understanding, Field Museum, Chicago.
5) Contacts with Islamic organizations. (a) USA: ISNA/Islamic Society of N. America; IIIT, International Institute of Islamic Thought; MSA, Muslim Students' Association of USA and Canada; ICNA/Islamic Circle of N. America; those in San Francisco Bay Area (b) International: WAMY/World Assembly of Muslim Youth, and others in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Pakistan, India, etc. IISTD had part-time officers and a temporary office in Palo Alto, CA.

Proposed Activities: 1998 and Beyond
( This was Proposed in early 1998. Much was accomplished by end of 1998 through
intensification of the Activities as in 1997 and other new initiatives. For example, three issues of IISTD Newsletters were published in 1998, and mailed to chapters of Muslim Students’ Associations and Islamic centers in USA and Canada, and distributed in numerous Islamic conferences in USA ).
a) To intensify and expand the Activities of 1997, USA and international.
b) To publish IISTD announcements in selected Islamic magazines.
c) To create in Major Cities IISTD Coordinators or Chapters through their colleges, universities, chapters of MSA/Muslim Students’ Association, Islamic centers, etc.
d) To submit proposals to U.S. secular organizations:
Example 1: NEH/National Endowment for the Humanities, "Summer Seminar & Institutes Program", to conduct IISTD's 4-6 weeks "Institute" or "Seminar" on Islamic Science and Technology, for College Instructors, and School Teachers, like those on
Islamic topics which NEH has previously funded.
e) To raise funds through US and international sources:
Non-Muslim: Foundations, businesses, esp. the multi-nationals; U.S. government
sources; United Nations agencies.
Muslim: individuals, businesses, organizations.
f) In early 1998, formed a "Kuwait Friends of IISTD Committee", Kuwait.
Dr. Hashim M. Mahdi, member of IISTD Board of Directors, has an office in Jeddah;
Coordinators named in UAE; and IISTD has been introduced in India, Pakistan, and other countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait.
